Since the water is not a solid surface, there is some change to the water directly under the wings as a result of the airflow over/under the wings. While the lift of the wings is dependant upon the airflow over the wings, I believe that if the water is being deflected, there is some residual lift that would have been provided from the surface of the water but not so if it's being moved. That's my best guess for the day. Dave
